First Person Singular complements
its regular series with a monthly, musical, open mic based on a theme. A new
take on the traditional hootenanny, HOOT! delves into the entirety of popular
song - our modern folk inheritance - in programs that highlight our perennial
concerns: love, cars, money, summer, and pitching wang dang doodles. We'll
celebrate the singular songbooks of select artists, and create living mix-tapes
out of myriad sub-genres. Ready for new experiment in collective performance?
Then sign up below and get in on the act! It'll be a HOOT! Next HOOT!:

The Blood Countess: Music from the Time of Elizabeth Bathory (1560-1614)
Cançonièr offers a perfect complement to its acclaimed Black Dragon program:
music from the age of the infamous “blood countess,”
Elizabeth Bathory, a Hungarian noblewoman accused of all manner of
crimes and perversions, the most famous of which was bathing in the
blood of murdered female servants and peasants in the belief that this
would keep her eternally young. The truth of these crimes is unclear,
and there is evidence that she was innocent of many of the atrocities of
which she was accused, but her ghastly legend has endured through the
centuries, rivaling that of Vlad Dracula. Music of the Habsburg Court,
songs of Sebestyan Tinodi, Balkan folk music, songs of the Roma,
traditional Ottoman music, and music of the Bathory Court (including
Vecchi and Gabrieli). Cançonièr is joined by special guest Tom Zajac.

Making his US debut, harpsichordist Christiano Holtz was amongst the last pupils of the great Gustav Leonhardt.
His concerts and recordings are receiving rave reviews and are noted
for his judicious use of instruments uniquely suited to demanding
repertoire. His recital will feature rarely heard works of Bach, Handel and Mattheson.
